A noble SUV The Japanese design DNA is perhaps more apparent in the Ignis than in other Suzuki models, perhaps because there’s something of the Samurai about the vehicle. Certainly, it’s hard to take one’s eyes off, what with its coolly aggressive demeanour. And while it has the superficial appearance of a city car, one of the better looking ones, it has a much more muscular body. At no extra cost, this compact SUV is supplied with a glacial Pure White paint finish, which is complemented inside by blue accents. If you fancy a complete contrast, you might like to choose Super Black, or perhaps Fervent Red or Khaki Pearl – just three examples of optional colours that are available.
Petite yet practical Small it might be but the Suzuki Ignis nevertheless possesses a five-door body, ensuring that access for rear-row travellers is just as easy as it is for those in the front. And a wide-opening tailgate makes placing and retrieving bulky cargo as straightforward as possible.
Room up top If you’re heading to the beach for a spot of surfing, why not pop a pair of boards on top of the Ignis? This SUV is fitted with roof rails as standard and, once you’ve attached a rack, you’re good to go – and you’ll never look back. Whether you need to transport bikes, camping equipment or ladders, you’ll always have somewhere to put them.
All-weather illumination The vehicle is fitted with front fog lights as standard, which means you’re prepared for the worst the elements have to offer. Whether that takes the form of blanket fog or sheeting rain, these lamps will provide you with optimal visibility.
A roomy interior Compact doesn’t necessarily mean cramped, not in this SUV’s case. And it certainly helps that the Ignis is tall, ensuring there’s plenty of headroom front and back, and there’s a surprising amount of legroom too. It’s worth noting that the entry-level GL trim provides room for three in its rear compartment, while the GLX grade features a pair of seats. It’s a distinction that impacts on boot space, which is 271 litres with GL trims, which is really quite decent for such a diminutive car. And with rear seats folded, cargo capacity increases to 505 litres. GLX grades, meanwhile, offer a load volume of between 264 litres and 516 litres.
Cabin cubbies A centre console compartment provides a useful space to safely keep personal knick-knacks at close quarters. And to help ensure that you have access to fluids when you and your fellow passengers need them, a pair of bottle-holders is situated in each row, while a couple of drink-holders feature upfront, and another is located in the rear compartment.
Flexible The Suzuki Ignis is fitted with 60/40 split-folding rear seats as standard, which means it provides plenty of flexible passenger/cargo-carrying options. If you decide to go for the GLX trim, the rear bench split-folds 50/50 (because this variant features just two seats in the back) and slides and reclines too.
Music plus The car is supplied with a four-speaker sound system as standard. This enables MP3/WMA playback, and thanks to the inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity, you can also stream your favourite tunes – and enjoy hands-free phone communication. Speaking of phones, another standard-issue feature is Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, which allows you to access your smartphone’s contents via the car’s touchscreen display.
Performance Whether you choose the GL or GLX trim level, it’ll come with a 1.2-litre 66kW engine, which puts out a perky 120Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. GL variants feature five-speed manual transmission and return a welcome 4.7 litres per 100 km, while producing CO2 emissions as low as 107g/km. GLX iterations, meanwhile, are paired with smooth-shifting continuously variable transmission, and return 4.9 litres per 100 km, while producing emissions from 114g/km.
Passive safety features A range of passive safety features are included as standard, such as front, side and curtain airbags, three-point seatbelts in every position and all-around head-restraints. Child protection includes a pair of ISOFIX anchor points, which are located in the rear compartment.
Active safety features As well as driver aids such as Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Stability Program, the Ignis features Hill-hold Control (HHC). This is an essential piece of kit whenever the engine is started on a slope, because it prevents the wheels from moving – until you put pressure on the accelerator pedal, that is.
Reverse with confidence Backing a car into a parking space isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, especially if you’re pressed for time and there are other motorists waiting on you to finish the procedure. Thanks to a standard-issue reversing camera, you’ll soon have reverse parking down to a fine art.
